In 1983, in the style of the voyageurs,
Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and Minister of Communications
Francis Fox paddled a canoe across the Ottawa River to the Parc
Laurier site. There, after being greeted by museum officials,
the Prime Minister turned the first sod to mark the beginning of
the construction phase of the new museum project. (51 seconds)

A demonstration of how, in the 1980s, then
state-of-the-art computer-aided design equipment was used by the
architect to model the building before its construction, and to
print out site plans that could easily be updated.
