A Photographic Exploration of Canada with Malak

This site full of historical detail provides visitors of all ages with descriptions of the lives of the inhabitants of New France from the XVIth to the XVIIIth century, as well as presenting the places they explored and inhabited. Through Malak's discerning eye, visitors can step back in time to see how the territory that would become Canada evolved throughout its history. The site includes photos taken in several regions of the country, with a focus on Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba. We will also find in this site photographs from periods before and after the New-France era, like those taken on Viking sites L'Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland and Fort William, Ontario.

A Photographic Exploration of Canada with Malak is a component of the Virtual Museum of New France. This site was created in association with the Canada's Digital Collections Program of Industry Canada.

And now, pack your bags and follow in Malak's footsteps as he journeys across Canada!

MALAK

Tahuyati Kifa haloucum
(Hi, how are you? in Armenian.)

How does one go about introducing this internationally renowned photographer, who has continually opened our eyes to the beauty, wealth and diversity of Canada's landscapes? Let's start with his first name - Malak - which reveals his Armenian origins. Depending on where you place the accent, the name can mean either a reigning king, or an angel. Thus we can suggest that Malak is both the king of Canadian landscape photography, and an angel to share his art with us. How's that for a good start?

Malak Karsh was born in Armenia, and came to Canada in October 1937. He worked as a photographer's assistant to his brother Yousuf Karsh, a famous portrait photographer. The second day after he arrived in Canada, Malak discovered the region of Wakefield in the Outaouais, in all its autumn splendor, and fell in love at first sight. He couldn't believe the glorious harmony of the fall colours in the Gatineau hills. He was 21 years old when he took his first picture in this new world, and thousands of others would follow: a passion was born.

From then on, Malak was seized with a desire to explore Canada. He achieved this dream with the help of his wife, Barbara, who has always supported and assisted him in his photographic career. Barbara is his right-hand woman : she maintains an inventory both of the places they visit and of his photos. And their adventure continues ... several times a year, Malak plans picture-taking trips. His love of this land remains as strong and passionate today as it was when he first set eyes on it

Malak has over one million photos of the Canadian provinces and territories. Many of his pictures have become famous, such as his 1963 picture of log-driving on the Ottawa River, which was used on the one-dollar bill from 1974 until 1987, when the loonie was introduced instead.

By making masterpieces out of everything he sees, Malak gives thanks to Canada for having opened its arms to him. Thanks to his determination and enthusiasm, he has achieved his goal of photographing Canada and allowing the whole world to share in the glories of this vast land. He hopes that the images on this site will tempt you to travel and learn more about your own history. He also wants to share his secret formula for success : "If you cherish your dream more than anything else, nothing can prevent you from making it come true!"

Arjou an tähjoubati hazi el souar!

(Enjoy the photos!)

Saffra saïdé!

(Have a wonderful trip!)

How to visit the site

There are two ways to navigate A Photographic Exploration of Canada with Malak

By Place  – Images can be viewed starting from a map and choosing a specific location. The map is divided into three regions, representing areas of development in the days of New France: the Atlantic region, the St. Lawrence Valley and the Way West. Each photo is accompanied by a brief text describing historical events related to the site.

By Theme  – This method is useful if you want to do research in a specific field. Photos are grouped under various main theme headings within each region, under subjects like the military, religion, fishing, voyageurs, Amerindians, etc. When you choose a particular theme, a window comes up presenting a certain number of reduced-scale photos. Click on the photo you want to enlarge it and view its descriptive text.
