COLLECTION ONTARIO PUPPETRY ASSOCIATION – documents textuels, iconographiques, filmiques et sonores – 1929-1996 – *5,25m.

La Ontario Puppetry Association prit naissance avec la réunion de quatre organismes provinciaux en octobre 1956, la Eastern Ontario Guild of Puppetry, la Toronto Guild of Puppetry, la South Western Ontario Guild of Puppetry et l’organisme gouvernemental «Community Programmes Branch» représenté par George Merten. Une fois réunis, ces groupes représentèrent à l’époque le plus important regroupement de marionnettistes en Amérique du Nord en termes de membres. Parmi les membres fondateurs, citons: Kenneth B. et Dorothy McKay, Arthur et Fern Stimson, Carol Hicks (Toombs), George Merten, Rodger Greig, Tom et Elsie Harrison, Ed Kendall, John et Linda Keogh.

L’association assuma un rôle d’éducation et de diffusion de ses diverses ressources auprès de ses membres et du public en général, par le prêt des collections de marionnettes, diapositives, la publication d’un bulletin périodique (OPAL), l’organisation d’événements tels festivals, ateliers, conférences; ce rôle se trouva grandement accru en 1980, lors de l’ouverture du Puppet Centre à North York, en banlieue de Toronto; le Centre servit de Musée, abritant les collections considérables, les expositions, activités, et une somme importante de documentation relative à la OPA. Cette mission se poursuivit jusqu’en 1993, année de la fermeture du Centre. La OPA continue toutefois d’œuvrer pour l’avancement des arts reliés à la marionnette d’ici et d’ailleurs.

Outre la documentation administrative couvrant la période 1954 à 1992, la collection documentaire consiste en plusieurs séries de dossiers thématiques : Marionnettistes et art de la marionnette au Canada; Marionnettistes internationaux et art de la marionnette internationale; Sujets d’intérêt variés sur l’art de la marionnette; Associations internationales, festivals de la marionnette canadiens et internationaux; Expositions du Puppet Centre (OPA). Parmi les dossiers thématiques, on retrouve des sources antérieures à 1954; cette documentation consiste essentiellement en du matériel provenant de la collection Rosalynde Osborne Stearn, et est reliée à la collection détenue par la Bibliothèque Universitaire McGill (section des livres rares). Rosalynde Stearn se préoccupa activement de promouvoir l’art de la marionnette au Canada au cours de la première moitié du siècle, produisant notamment un film, «The Clouds» en 1938 (en collection), et collaborant à nombre d’ouvrages de référence étrangers (encyclopédies, périodiques, etc.) à propos de l’art de la marionnette au Canada; elle collabora au rayonnement de l’OPA dès sa création, sous maints aspects.

Une partie de la collection est en cours de traitement, et sera accessible d’ici 1997 (voir note finale). La partie décrite ci-dessus est accessible sur rendez-vous, en communiquant avec le service à la clientèle de la Division des services de gestion de l’information du MCC. Le catalogage automatisé des séries énumérées sera complété au cours de l’année 1996.

COLLECTION JOHN E. CONWAY – documents textuels, iconographiques, filmiques et sonores – 1920-1988 – 0,22m.

Le marionnettiste ontarien John E. Conway fut un véritable pionnier de la télévision canadienne. En tant que personnage principal de l’émission inaugurale «Uncle Chichimus and Hollyhock», produite par le réseau anglais de télévision publique CBC et ayant débuté en septembre 1952, John Conway devint une figure de proue du divertissement télévisé au Canada (l’émission «Uncle Chichimus and Hollyhock» fut la première à être transmise sur le réseau canadien, exception faite du bulletin des nouvelles nationales).

Conway s’exerca d’abord comme marionnettiste de carrière avec la «Heddle Troupe of Marionettes» au cours des années 1930, années de son adolescence. En 1939, il quitta ses études secondaires pour participer à une tournée américaine avec la troupe, rebaptisée «Royal Canadian Puppet Ballet». La troupe survécut jusqu’au déclenchement de la deuxième guerre mondiale, alors que ses activités furent interrompues; elles ne furent jamais reprises: une partie de la collection des marionnettes Heddle appartient aujourdh’ui au MCC, partie de la collection d’objets Conway. En 1942, Conway joignit l’Armée de l’air canadienne et servit en Angleterre jusqu’en 1945. Dès son retour au pays, il fit une maîtrise en anglais et obtint une chaire à la University of British Columbia, qu’il occupa de 1948 à 1950; ce fut au cours de ces trois années qu’il conçut la future émission de renom «Uncle Chichimus».

À l’époque, les dirigeants de la CBC voyaient d’un œil favorable la diffusion d’une émission canadienne qui serait le pendant de l’émission américaine à succès «Kukla, Fran and Ollie», produite par le marionnettiste Burr Tillstrom et son adjointe Fran Allison. John Conway fut engagé à titre de contractuel peu de temps avant l’inauguration officielle de la télévision, le 8 septembre 1952. L’émission «Uncle Chichimus and Hollyhock» garda l’antenne jusqu’en juin 1954. Puis, quelques années après son expérience avec la CBC, Conway produisit pour son propre compte une série du 26 courts métrages dont le contenu s’inspirait des personnages de l’émission précédente, et qui s’intitulait «The Adventures of Chichimus». Cette série ne connut pas de succès notoire auprès des réseaux canadiens et américains; toutefois, elle fut amplement diffusée dans d’autres parties du monde (Moyen-Orient, Afrique, Hong Kong). Conway multiplia également les spectacles en salle au cours de cette période, surtout dans les magasins à rayons des grands centres ontariens, souvent dotés de scènes permettant de telles représentations.

De 1961 à 1966, une nouvelle adaptation de l’émission originale, renommée «Uncle Chichimus Show», fut produite par le nouveau réseau de télévision privée d’Ottawa, CJOH. John Conway mit fin à ses activités artistiques et médiatiques en 1966, et retourna à l’enseignement de l’anglais dans les écoles secondaires publiques d’Ottawa jusqu’en 1982.

Le fonds documentaire John Conway fait maintenant partie de la collection d’archives du MCC; les documents iconographiques comprennent des diapositives couleur, des photographies couleur et noir et blanc (incluant une série de photos noir et blanc format 8×10).

Les documents filmiques et sonores se composent de bandes audio (entrevues), d’une série de 26 courts métrages (15 min.) produite par J. Conway, «Adventures of Chichimus», de 9 films divers (surtout en kinéscope), de négatifs noir et blanc des intitulés de films pour la série précédente, d’un disque vinyle format 78rpm (production privée) et de 3 blocs d’impression «half tone» pour le catalogue promotionnel de la même série «Adventures».

Enfin, la collection comprend 17,5cm de documents textuels; ils se composent de correspondance, ententes diverses, matériel promotionnel relatif aux prestations de Conway et aux divers contrats de télévision, notes de conférences et allocutions sur l’art de la marionnette, une sélection de courrier d’admirateurs (1954-1966), ententes de brevet d’invention pour les créations artistiques de Conway (marionnettes), coupures de presse, communiqués de presse, et un spécilège préparé par Suzanne Mess, conceptrice des costumes pour «Uncle Chichimus» (le spécilège rassemble des coupures de presse, des revues de presse et des programmes publicitaires).

La collection Ontario Puppetry Association (référence MCC no.R95-2) abrite une autre partie de la collection documentaire John Conway (documents textuels et iconographiques); les documents textuels et quelques documents iconographiques ont été classés et décrits sous la série «Marionnettistes et art de la marionnette au Canada» (voir le dossier John Conway); d’autres documents iconographiques sont en cours de traitement.
